Project Description

The MUST project is located in the 6th of October City, 30Km outside Cairo. It is located on the main spine of the city, surrounded by other regional facilities . Project design and execution started in January 1995 and was completed in September 1996. The University started the first academic year in October 1996. The university education program necessitates the construction of 9 faculties in order to cover all main educational fields. Besides, administration building, student facilities and infrastructure. The project includes the following buildings: University administration, Conference Center, Center for Research and Services, Central Library, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Mass Media, Faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty of Social Studies, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacology, Faculty of Applied Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry Technology, Faculty of Tourism, Student Medical Center, Student Union, and Mosque. The project was planned to complement the surrounding environment, and comprises an integral environmental system, which respects the dynamic balance between the natural environment and the building. The site is located in the east zone, at the highest elevation in 6th October City, while the topography gently descends form north to south. The project site forms a trapezoidal shape and is surrounded by 3 roads from the north, west and south. On the east is the sire for a new hospital. The northern road (26th July road extension) is the city spine, which all regional activities are located. The climatic date have been analyzed, and the expected climatic effects on the project were calculated. The building uses traditional Islamic architectural concepts to satisfy modern needs. The design is centered around an atrium that has an air-catch in each corner. The air-catch shafts are designed to maintain constant air speed at all levels. To minimize total heat load the building envelope has maximum openings in the north facade and minimum in the West with appropriate shading device. The design concept for the library: The main entrance roof is a series of stepped domes that ascend to the climax, the Logos. The library, like all the University buildings, was designed to utilize environmental forces. The building is centered around the entrance hall, the atrium, the climax of the composition (macrocosm). The reading halls, located to the north, have their roof tilted towards north to minimize solar intensity and facilitate day lighting Without glare. The openings in the roof act as light and air catches. The bridges over the entrance hall allow books to be transported to the reading halls, conveying the sense of place. the building comprises a ground floor and two reading floors on the north side and five floors of stacks on the south, with the entrance hall in between.
